EXHIBITIONS
FESTIVAL ARTIST
08 – 17 June at 14:00
Venue: FynArts Gallery
Guest Speaker: Bina Genovese
Curated by Subotzky Studio and Goodman Gallery
“At the heart of my work is a fixation with revealing the gap between what is presented (and idealised) and what is hidden, coupled with a desire to pull apart and reassemble the schizophrenia of contemporary existence”.
Mikhael’s first body of photographic work, Die Vier Hoeke (The Four Corners), was an in-depth study of the South African penal system. Umjiegwana (The Outside) and Beaufort West extended this investigation to the relationship between everyday life in post-apartheid South Africa and the historical, spatial, and institutional structures of control.
His works are found in public and private collections around the world including the MoMA, Centre Georges Pompidou, Tate Modern and South African National Galleries (SANG), among others. This exhibition draws from his early photographic works as well as more recent related collage and works on canvas.
Mikhael was born in 1981 in Cape Town, South Africa, and is currently based in Johannesburg.

CERAMICS
Opening: 8 June 2024 at 10:30
Venue: Windsor Hotel
Open daily from 09:00 to 17:00
Curated by Liz Coates
Firing a pot or other artwork is the point of no return. What happens in the kiln is irreversible and, to a large extent, unpredictable. Until it enters the kiln, clay can be reclaimed, broken up, soaked, and reformed into raw material, but in the kiln clay becomes ceramic.
You will view some of the unique ceramic artworks created by twelve highly skilled contemporary artists. Each has their own artistic approach and specific language to address their audience in the way they want their work to speak and to communicate their own distinctive meaning.
SCULPTURE ON THE CLIFFS

KUJIRA – BONSAI TREES
8 to 17 June
Venue: The Marine Hotel Courtyard
Open daily: 09:00 – 17:00
View these magnificent specimens of an ancient art form that was first introduced from China to Japan in the 6th to 7th century. This fine art is now recognised globally.
The exhibition will include a selection of some of the finest Bonsai trees from the region, all locally grown in the Overstrand. A diverse range of planting styles and species will be on display, with many species being indigenous to South Africa.
The Japanese word Bonsai literally means ‘plantings in tray’ although the modern meaning of the word goes a bit further: ‘miniature, artistic tree in a pot’. (Master Bonsai – Rudi Adam) Kujira or ‘whale’ in Japanese is the apt name for the Bonsai Club in the Overstrand. Some local bonsai experts will be in attendance to discuss how to join the bonsai club, get involved, fall in love with the little trees, or to just enjoy the exhibition.
